Hey SI, how do I vibe code an app?
Yes! Easy does it, here's the whole wave. ♥
How to vibe code your first app (beginner guide, 2026)
Short answer: vibe coding means building an app by describing what you want to an AI coding tool in plain English, then testing and steering it. Pick a beginner-friendly tool, write a short brief, build one small feature at a time, make a save point after each win, and finish by asking the AI to check its own app for problems.
Step 1: Pick a tool (no stress, any of these work)
- No install, all in the browser: Lovable, Bolt, Replit, or Google AI Studio. Great for a first app.
- On your computer, more control: Cursor, Claude Code (the desktop app has a Code tab with no terminal needed), or OpenAI Codex.
- Prices and free limits change often, so check each tool's pricing page.
Step 2: Write a 5-line brief
I'm a complete beginner. Help me build a small web app.
What it does: [ONE SENTENCE]
Who it's for: [WHO]
The 3 must-have features: [1, 2, 3]
Keep it simple: no logins, payments or personal data in version 1. Explain each step in plain English.
Step 3: Build one thing at a time
Let's build only this next: [ONE FEATURE]. Make the smallest change that works, then tell me how to test it in the browser. Don't touch anything else.
Test it yourself. If it works, make a save point (ask: "help me save a git commit for this working version").
Step 4: Ask the AI to check its own app
This is the prompt most beginners skip, and it often finds the most bugs:
Please review the whole app like a careful tester. List anything that's broken, confusing, insecure (like exposed API keys), or doesn't match my brief. Then fix the top 3 issues one at a time, explaining each fix.
Step 5: Put it online
When it works locally, use the free deploy prompt. If you get stuck in a fix loop, take a breath and use Break the Loop.
SI's chill tips
- Small apps finish. Trackers, checklists, calculators and one-page sites are the sweet spot.
- Add a rules file so the AI stays careful. See AGENTS.md for beginners.
- Getting stuck is normal. You've got this.
